The Treasurer indicated that not all the annual fees had been received yet. The expenditures were small so that the final balance was positive for the first triennium, even excluding the donation from the Crystallographic Society of Japan. Sydney R. Hall stated that some expenditures for publishing the Newsletter were borne within the normal operating budget of the University of W.A.

ITEM 4. President's Report 1987-1990

It was explained by the President Sydney R. Hall that accounts for the ASCA activities during the triennium 1987-1990 were reported to the XV lUCr General Assembly. The main activity during the triennium was the publication of the AsCA Newsletter. He emphasized that the main difficulty faced with this was not financial but a lack of news contributions from membership countries.

ITEM 5. Election of 1990-1993 Executive

I) Nominations were called for the position of President.

Nobutami Kasai was proposed by S.R. Hall, seconded by J.W. White, No further nominations were received and Professor N. Kasai was declared elected.

II) Nominations were called for the Position of Vice-President.

Fang Ming Miao was proposed by J. Harada, seconded by G.R. Desiraju. No further nominations were recorded and Professor Miao was declared elected.

III) Nominations were called for the position of Secretary-Treasurer

Yu Wang was proposed by N. Kasai, seconded by T.C.W. Mak, although she was absent. No further nominations were recorded and Yu Hang was declared elected.

After 15 minutes of Coffee break the meeting was reopened with newly elected President Professor Kasai in the Chair.

ITEM 6. Nomination and Election of New AsCA Members

Nominations were called for the new member countries of AsCA. Vietnam and Bangladesh which were wishing to join AsCA were proposed by S.R. Hall, and Indonesia by J.W. White. According to J.W. White Atomic Reactor Centre had recently been established in Indonesia so that there must have been some Crystallographers to whom we may contact. Singapore was proposed by Thomas C.W. Mak, as he might try to find a crystallographer in Singapore. The Council agreed that all nominated countries should be accepted as AsCA members and the representatives should be contacted. It was reported by Y.J. Park that Korean Crystallographic Association was formed September 23, 1989 and the Association consist of about 100 crystallographers. The list of Executive members was tabled.

ITEM 7. 1990-1993 Activities and Budget.

I) Newsletter: It was confirmed that it is important for AsCA to continue making regular Newsletters.

II) Proposed AsCA Meeting in 1992: It was reported that J.W. White, President

of Society of Crystallographers in Australia (SCA), and F. Maruroo, President of Crystallographic Society of Japan (CSJ), had agreed to have a Joint Meeting at a site between the two countries in 1992. The format of the meeting would be three days with two days being in weekend; no excursion. The time; Middle - End October, 1992. Probable location Singapore. The budget; shared between Australia and Japan on a cost-recovery basis. It was proposed that this joint meeting be organised under the auspices of the AsCA.

Desiraju pointed out that if the meeting was held in Singapore, not only Indian students but also local students would have the opportunity to attend. Probably 40 - 50 students from India could attend provided that student accommodation was available. He hoped that the meeting would be held in August instead of October. Academic calendars were then examined for the membership countries but there were difficulties in finding a suitable overlap because the region extended into North and South hemispheres.

After considerable discussion the Council agreed that this joint meeting should be promoted as the first AsCA meeting. The date should be fixed by the SCA and CSJ.

It was suggested that the AsCA should ask the lUCr for travel funds for the first AsCA meeting.

Ill) Budget: It was proposed by H.T. Robinson that the unit membership contribution for 1990-1993 be the same as previous triennum, that is 120 Australian dollars per annum. This was seconded by J.W. White. The motion was passed unanimously.

ITEM 8. Other Business

It was announced by J.W. White that a workshop with respect to Small Angle Scattering would be held in Australia. It was suggested by W.T. Robinson that it would be useful to fund senior visiting crystallographer to visit under- developed countries in the AsCA region to instruct young scientists. It was added by J.W. White that this is a good idea if it could be afforded so that we should inform the Teaching Commission of lUCr of this if it is possible.

The meeting was closed at 16:30
